Have you ever been up Cadillac Mountain to catch the earliest sunrise in the country?
The first time we went we thought: This is crazy!
Who gets up at 3 a.m. to drive up the 1,532-foot peak on Maine’s Mount Desert Island just to see the dang sun come up?
Well, it turns out 200 people do.
They were wrapped in blankets against the predawn chill. They sat on rocks looking out over the island-studded sea.
Then, at 5 a.m., that big, golden ball topped the horizon. The sky blazed pink, purple, red. Reflected in the sea.
We all clapped. We rose to our feet.
A standing ovation for the new day!
So here's your new day. How will you spend it?
"How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives."
That line by Annie Dillard hit hard. I used to think life would start when my to-do list ended.
But no. Life happens when we're doing laundry, cleaning brushes, waiting for the rain to stop.
The secret, I found, is fix your eyes on the everyday. Those little wonders:
Sunlight on the swing. The garden chair at rest.
Those crazy chickens who thrust their heads out first then let their feet catch up under them.
When we had an art farm, we used to invite friends over to watch the chickens. We called it Chicken TV. Nothing much happened, but it was endlessly entertaining.
We wish we could carry chickens in our vans. Instead we watch the wild turkey mamas herd their young through our camp. The adolescents dash madly after grasshoppers. The commotion cheers our soul.
What cheers yours? We invite you to go spot some beauty. Your day will be better for it. Promise.
Stay wild!
